    apple-earnings-charts-1q13

so, apple reported its quarterly earnings yesterday and they were THE LARGEST CORPORATE EARNINGS IN THE HISTORY OF THE EARTH! so, obviously, their stock went down 10% as soon as it was announced… this is a company that just had a record quarterly revenue of $54.5 billion and record quarterly net profit of $13.1 billion as well as saw 67% growth in china. let that sink in as a disappointment. it’s almost as if financial analists are either morons or have something to gain from a dipping apple stock. either way, part of me is kinda glad the apple is broken line is back in full force because it makes us appreciators of well-made products nerds again, a status hard to reconcile with buying stuff from the most succesful company in history… all i have to say is, buy now.

note: being a documented moron myself, let me disclose that this post is NOT meant as formal investment advice but rather mere opinion. as if.

    oped-new7

imagining the unimaginable as a parent is thinking about not having to get your child ready for school on a sleepy monday morning through no lazyness of your own but because their lives were snatched away by a madman. as scolded as my wife and i routinely get by our kids’ teachers for so rarely getting them to school on time, i have to admit that today, we feel little to no qualms about dressing, feeding and squeezing them slowly and for a bit longer, emailed late-note be damned. to think that 20 sets of parents have to break the routine of hurrying their children along as they brush their teeth, pick out outfits and serve bowls of cereals this morning… my heart breaks as my tears muddle my shirt imagining that which i cannot, going on living without which has giving meaning to my last 10 years on this earth.

mourning is not enough, action must be taken to care about those for whom life feels too hard to bear before they snatch another life. i have nothing more profound to say on the matter, no prescription, no advice to soothe even my mind, so sad i feel… let’s find a way back this week, together please.

the otherworldly juxtaposition of bossanova and the “iron dome” missile interception system in this clip from an israeli wedding is blowing my mind. and that’s very close to not being a metaphor… it is friday, the day we’re supposed to thank a lord of some sort for having allowed us to “survive” a work week presumably filled with “torture” such as returning that phone call to management, dealing with ann or working the extra hours necessary to do the job reasonably well, you know, torture. i’m sure that’s how both sides of gaza are thinking about their friday right now, i’m sure. a spark has been stricken, let’s hope the wind, or prevailing minds, put it out.

not just for him but us too. it is time we came together as a country and stopped fucking talking about what we’re going to do, about what we might do, about what we can do… and fucking do it. let’s meet at lunch and check each other on progress shall we?…

voting in a place of worship makes me seriously question whether these people understand that bit about the separation of church and state…

being myself still a french citizen (mostly for the cheese,) gina is the only voting adult in our family. i just go along to make her look good.

voted for the only guy who will not fuck with my internet (see nilay.) also, healthcare. also, women’s rights. also, science.

last but not least, could it have been a coincidence that somebody left “the impossible dream” sheet music wide open on the church piano in front of the voting booths? i think not…

not stop reading and GO VOTE!

    November 2, 2012

wow, i’m not feeling so tops today… maybe it’s because the kids haven’t had school all week and they have sapped my will to live or because i feel a little weird having electricity, internet and risotto while so many are hurting nearby. either way, maybe a little 90s-style joey bada$$ can help. maybe. doubt it though. please, all of you stay safe and a have a (re)constructive weekend.

hope you are all safe and sound after the fury of hurricane sandy. actually, if you are, the best way to help the eastern united states right now, whether it is through donations or volunteering, is to tap the resources of the good people at the red cross and act on those good intentions. and for those still in her path, don’t forget to check the crisis map!

it has been said (too) many times but we here at the apartment creative agency strongly pursue the notion that design is indeed not how it looks but how it works. to that end, when we take on new projects, we heavily involve ourselves not merely with matters of colors, layouts and door handle choices but how a business works. that is especially true when we are tasked to create that business from scratch as was the case with one of the jewels on our chintzy crown, yelo spa. when entrepreneur nicolas ronco came to visit us, back from asia after courageously dropping off corporate america’s radar, he had an epiphany about an industry we seldom question, that of “the people we pay to feel better“: he judiciously wondered why it was that mindful rest is considered a boost to productivity over there and a shame over here?

we agreed with him that what was needed first and foremost was not to make a logo but rather to find ways to convince americans to seek better productivity, not more as they have been tasked to by protestant ethics this side of martin luther. to accomplish that, his strategy included creating a physical space where people would feel safe to compose themselves, with the help of a highly and specifically trained staff who understood and cared for personhood, not just wallethood, and worked to soothe each of its facets. and so we dug deep to understand social and behavioral processes, to understand the science of stress, the science of natural recovery, the science of well-ness. and through studying different forms of reflexology, chromatherapy, aromatherapy, skin care and more, we arrived at a cogent vision: that help, different than mere service, was what the launch city with a sleeping disorder needed.

and so we got to work, inventing new paths, procedures and YeloCabs™ along the way so that said help would be available in ingenious ways, even available to come to you when you couldn’t come to us. so deeply entrenched we became in the new brand that their success depended on ours, at every level of the company. and now, after 4 years of successful operation, having profits go up at the same time that competitors’ stagnated, it is time to go deeper still… as alan kay so rightly advanced, “the best way to predict the future is to invent it” and it is paramount, once in a frequent while, for companies to take stock, keep all the good ideas and clear one’s brain and inventory of all the ones that didn’t work in order to stay ahead, not of any competition, but of our own ambitions.

and that is why i am delighted and feel extremely fulfilled to have accepted nicolas’ offer to help him do just that and become yelo spa’s chief creative officer (on top of my job here, of course) and expand on all matters that impact the brand and its beloved customers. i could not be happier or more proud to be able to shepherd this amazing concept into roads heretofore undiscovered, especially in a field that rarely takes the kind of risks we at the apartment have built a reputation on! when a business understands design to be a strategic cog and not mere marketing gloss, it allows its entire hierarchy to function holistically and take its cues from very simple, customer-oriented goals and it is to nicolas’ credit to trust me to play thus with his baby and i hope not to disappoint.

it is then my pleasure to invite you to visit our website and make a reservation at yelospa.com, visit our location at 315 W57th street, get acquainted with our specials on our Facebook page and get involved in YELOlife on twitter @YeloSpa! there will be MUCH MORE in months to come as we continue to imagine the YELOfuture, be part of it and have a wonderful week!
